By |

Others who were injured are currently receiving medical care at Rhamu Referral Hospital.

Three people lost their lives while three others sustained injuries in a road accident involving a vehicle and pedestrians transporting firewood along the Rhamu-El Wak road on Thursday.

The accident occurred around 7:30 pm, Thursday, approximately 10 kilometres from Rhamu town, between Towfiq and Issack Kora.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle, a Land Cruiser, lost control after bursting tyres crashing into pedestrians who were ferrying firewood on a donkey cart, resulting in two fatalities at the scene.

"We were surprised by the speed of the vehicle, but just six minutes later, it was tragically involved in a fatal road accident 10 kilometres from Rhamu town," said Yussuf Aliow, a trader in Rhamu town.

Authorities from Rhamu Police Station and the local town chief promptly responded, evacuating the injured to Rhamu Sub-county Hospital.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, one victim succumbed to their injuries.

Others who were injured are currently receiving medical care at Rhamu Referral Hospital.

Rhamu town chief Mohamed Hussein expressed his condolences and urged residents to remain calm while efforts are made to care for the injured.

He appealed to the government to provide pedestrians with reflector jackets to enhance visibility and prevent future tragedies.

"I appeal to the national government and the county government to provide pedestrians with safety gears such as reflectors to save lives of road users," he said.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Mandera to Moyale at the time of the accident. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
